Milestones & Memories

Exciting news – the orioles have returned! I always enjoy seeing these beautiful birds return. A feeder filled with grape jelly is the key to luring this orange foul. I was thinking of a line I hope to put into a poem someday like, “I’d love to be high on grape jelly like a soaring oriole." Their song is one that I long for in the springtime. It gives me hope that we will actually have a spring!

I was honored to be a part of Mrs. O’Brien’s 4th and 5th grade class and talk about writing poetry. I shared some of my poems and tricks of the trade and was thrilled to listen to the poems they wrote! They are really talented kids and of course, they have the best teacher. I love talking to kids about poetry. I hope someday a student that attended one of my sessions finds me to tell me all about their successful writing career. I can dream!

Last weekend was Sydney’s graduation from Edgewood College. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Environmental Science (think sustainability). It was a beautiful day and really nice ceremony. I don’t necessarily cry during these milestones as I’m truly happy for my kids and all that they have accomplished. My dad, Huck (Syd’s boyfriend) and their friend Eric were at the ceremony. My mom and Austin joined us and we went to dinner at Sobie’s in Oconomowoc. A nice time was had by all. Syd is taking some time to weigh her options and do some things she’s been putting off. I’m so excited for her and this new chapter. She’s been working hard for 8 years with straight A’s, varsity volleyball and club volleyball taking up the majority of her time. I could not be more proud of her and how she has handled every hurdle and success along the way.

For Mother’s Day, I was alone, but I went to Ruby Rose Gallery and Willy St. Coop for groceries. Austin had a race day and he said, “Happy Mother’s Day” before he left in the morning. I could have spent the day at the track, but I really wanted a day to chill and I like being with myself so it’s all good. Syd had to work so I went to her and Huck’s place on Monday and had a wonderful dinner with them and their friends Bobby and Ethan. She gave me some gifts, and more importantly, a beautifully written card. I treasure hand-written cards and letters!

My best to all of the graduates and all of the nurturing women we know.

Let’s chat soon.

With affection,

Carrie VS
